TelevisaUnivision continued to invest more into its ViX streaming product during 1Q24, but that commitment comes at a cost. The company saw operating expenses grow 16% YOY to $821 million driven by those investments, investments in the expansion of its third-party ad sales business in Mexico and the comp of a non-recurring bad debt reversal last year.

While TU didn’t offer any subscriber numbers, CEO Wade Davis reiterated the company is on track to turn its DTC business profitable “in a few short months.” Early 3Q24 seems to be the specific target per Davis during TU’s previous earnings call. Davis did disclose that 70% of its DTC subscribers are coming from TU’s free funnel, which is prompting them to introduce a new ad-supported tier. It’ll be priced below the current premium tier ($6.99/month) and carry a limited ad load.

TU’s total revenue grew 7% to $1.15 billion, but total revenue in the U.S. remained flat at $739.9 for the quarter. The subscription and licensing segment also grew 9% to $473.4 million overall, but also remained flat in the U.S. with $326.5 million. TU saw a 34% rise in subscription and licensing revenue in Mexico from $110 million to $146.9 million. U.S. advertising revenue stayed even YOY at $399.4 million due to growth in DTC that was offset by softness in linear networks. However, in Mexico, ad revenue jumped 19% to $248.5 million thanks to private sector growth from new and existing clients across both linear and DTC.

In TU’s non-earnings news, the company is partnering with Shopsense AI to implement its retail media platform into key programming and events across TU’s portfolio. It’ll begin with the Latin American Music Awards that air tonight at 7pm across Univision, UNIMÁS, Galavision and ViX, and viewers will be able to see curated collections with items inspired by the hosts and talent throughout the night. Shopsense will use QR codes and dedicated URLs to direct viewers to a show-specific digital store.

It was CBS’ time to shine as its telecast of Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday became the most-watched telecast in history. The Chiefs-49ers game recorded a total audience delivery of 123.4 million average viewers across CBS, Paramount+, Nickelodeon, Univision, CBS Sports and NFL digital properties including NFL+, according to Nielsen Fast National data and Adobe Analytics. The 123.4 million mark is up 7% compared to last year’s big game, which set the previous record at 115.1 million. Approximately 202.4 million viewers watched all or part of the Super Bowl across networks, making it the highest unduplicated total audience in history as well. It also became the most-streamed Super Bowl in history with Paramount+getting in on the record-breaking fun.

The Chiefs’ dramatic victory led right into the post-Super Bowl series premiere of CBS’ “Tracker,” which recorded 18.4 million viewers and was the most-watched primetime entertainment program since 2021 (which was also a post-Super Bowl series debut of “The Equalizer”). Additionally, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” averaged 3.74 million viewers, the show’s largest Live+SD audience since its post-Super Bowl broadcast in 2021.

It’s now been over two weeks since Vidgo’s live TV service went down due to a vendor dispute, and the timeframe for when it’ll go live again remains to be seen.

The outage began September 29 in what the company attributed to “a dispute with a vendor who changed the terms on Vidgo in the middle of the contract and forced the new terms on Vidgo after hours on Friday night.” Vidgo’s live network lineup includes Fox, ESPN, Hallmark Channel, HGTV, MTV, Freeform and Univision.

A Vidgo exec told CFX that there aren’t any plans to shut down the service despite the prolonged dispute, and the company has begun offering a two-week credit to all subscribers and a $10 discount for the next six months.

“We have been working in good faith with the vendor involved and believe we are making solid progress. We do anticipate a full return of service in the near future. While we do not have a specific timeline, we will continue to share new information and updates,” the company said in a Facebook post which has since been deleted.

A group of media orgs—including C-SPAN, CNN, NAB, The NY Times Company, TEGNA and Univision—are requesting that cameras be allowed access to former President Donald Trump’s upcoming trial in U.S. District Court for DC. The trial date is currently set for March 4.

The coalition also has asked the Federal Judicial Conference to grant an exception to its ban on cameras in federal criminal cases. They aren’t the only ones advocating for cameras.

During a July interview on Fox News, Trump’s attorney John Lauro said: “If I appear in court, I’m going to be representing not only the President of the United States, but the sovereign citizens of this country, who deserve to hear the truth. The first thing we would ask for is let’s have… cameras in the courtroom, so all Americans can see what’s happening in our criminal justice system.”

The coalition of media companies also filed a motion Thursday requesting to record and telecast the trial by the media or by the Court publishing its own livestream on YouTube or releasing video/audio at the end of each trial day.
